Pneumatic actuators
Pneumatic actuators use the pressure of compressed air to generate the torque required to turn a valve. Most quarter turn pneumatic actuators have a piston and a rack-and-pinion gear mechanism to generate the torque. An inlet port on the actuator introduces compressed air into the actuator. The compressed air moves the piston linearly, which is attached to the rack. The rack is connected to the pinion through gears, therefore, converting the linear motion to rotational. The pinion simultaneously transfers this motion to the valve stem, which as discussed will turn the ball of the valve to either open or close it.
